Student Housing and Short Stay Units
The primary goal of the Kronenburg development is to address the urgent need for student and campus related housing in the region. The planned Short Stay units are specifically intended for students and campus related groups, with a maximum stay of six months per resident, in line with environmental regulations related to Schiphol Airport. This approach allows us to provide much-needed housing while complying with legal constraints that currently prevent permanent student housing in this location.
We understand your concern about the proportion of Short Stay units. The design reflects both the legal limitations and the ambition to create a vibrant, accessible, and inclusive student environment.
Future Flexibility and Vision
Although the current legal framework restricts permanent housing on this site, the buildings are being designed with future adaptability in mind. Should environmental conditions or regulations change, the structures can be converted into permanent housing. This flexibility is a key part of our long-term vision for the area.
Environmental and Green Space Concerns
We acknowledge your concerns about the preservation of green space and local biodiversity. The development plan includes designated quiet zones and green corridors, and we are working with ecological experts to ensure that local flora and fauna are respected and protected. Hello!
As a resident of the surrounding area, it is good to hear about plans to develop the Kronenburg area into student housing and recreational facilities (among other things). However, it is troubling to see the disproportionate number of Short Stay units compared to student housing units along with a lack of plan/vision for permanent housing possibilities in the area. The high number of short stay units does not serve the community well, and does not contribute positively to the worsening housing crisis across the country. In addition, the lack of a clearly-marked target group for these short stay units adds to my concern. With no target groups and no elaborate plan on how these short stay units can be converted to permanent housing, this project proposal leaves a lot to be desired. Short stay units do not serve the community or help foster a new, welcoming, future-oriented living space - what this does is only contribute further to the housing crisis and leaves no room for improvement.
On a different but related part of the matter, the environmental plan denotes some quiet/peaceful zones that seem more like an afterthought rather than a focus of preserving the green/natural atmosphere that the area currently has. It also ignores various form of wildlife and flora in the area that will be heavily affected by the construction plans. With the current plans, the marked quiet/peaceful zones will not be adequate for providing all residents and users of the area with proper opportunities to relax and spend time outside and feel connected to their surroundings.
As others noted already, the reaction time for this project is much shorter than needed, and I hope the municipality and project developers will take this into consideration and allow for more thought and public input into the revisioning of the Kronenburg area.
